Clia UK urges cruise industry to join charity bike ride

The deputy chair of Clia has urged people to join an 80 mile bike ride to raise money for the Family Holiday Association (FHA).

Giles Hawke is leading a group of cyclists, which includes Princess Cruises’ Tony Roberts, Bernard Carter, of Oceania Cruises and Choosing Cruising’s Robbie White to the Clia Winter Ball.

The FHA takes underprivileged children and their parents on short breaks around the country.

The cycling group will start at Bishop’s Waltham, Hampshire, on December 18 and ride west towards De Vere Cotswold Water Park Hotel in Gloucestershire en route to the Clia event.

Last year, Hawke, White, Carter and Roberts were among a group to cycle a similar distance to the Clia Winter Ball which was held at the De Vere Wokefield Park in Berkshire.

Hawke said: “It would be nice if more people could get involved this year – the more, the merrier.

“At the moment it is all blokes so it would be nice if there were any ladies out there who wanted to join us. It is not an old boys’ club.”

Hawke urged people to think hard before committing to the ride, which he hopes will raise more than £2,000 for the FHA.

“This is a relatively serious itinerary,” he added. “People need to make sure that they can get the distance and they have the right gear.

But he encouraged those willing to train to get involved, adding: “If you do not cycle today, you have time to get fit before the ride in December.”
