New AWTE project hopes to get women into boardrooms

The Association of Women Travel Executives (AWTE) is launching an innovative new project to encourage senior women in the industry to step up to board level.

AWTE chairman Tricia Handley said details of the Boardroom Ready project will be announced on the AWTE website at 2pm on July 20.

The project will consist of a series of workshops examining issues such as the roles and responsibilities of being a board member, and how to understand boardroom politics.

It will also promote the idea of women joining companies as non-executive directors.

Handley said: “The Boardoom Ready project will aim to create a pool of talent that will help address diversity in the boardroom.”

The project is in partnership with Stargate Capital. Director of Stargate Capital and fund manager of Trapezia, Gita Patel, said: “Diversity in the boardroom is essential in today’s environment. Those responsible for boardroom appointments [must] be aware of this pool of talent and its performance enhancing attributes. It’s not rocket science – so one questions why it’s happening so slowly?”

Once the project has started, the AWTE wants to expand into other sectors, and run a second tier for women who might not be in a position to think about working at board level, but would like to in the future.
