Globe Travel Awards 2010

Nominations are now in for the Globe Travel Awards 2010 – and it’s a matter of weeks until voting begins.

The Globe Travel Awards are the only awards in the travel industry that are voted for by you, the travel agent. If a supplier wins a Globe, it means that the travel agent community views them as the best in their field.

TWgroup chief executive Simon Ferguson said: “The Globe Travel Awards night is the highlight of the travel industry calendar, and next year’s event is shaping up to be a fantastic night. Ticket sales have been brisk, and sales of tables are up on this point last year.”

Ferguson added: “The Globes recognise excellence in the travel sector. As the industry looks forward to improved economic conditions in 2010, the endorsement of winning a Globe could be vital.”

Special awards

A number of special awards will also be presented, including the Special Achievement Award, sponsored by the Barbados Tourism Authority.

Travel Weekly will also be including its Agent Excellence Awards, sponsored by Affordable Car Hire, in the proceedings for the first time.

The Penny Akam Award

The 2010 Globe Travel Awards will be the first year that someone from the industry will be presented with the Penny Akam Award.

This award was introduced to commemorate the life of Penny Akam, who lost her battle with cancer in December 2008. In her 20 years at Travel Weekly, Penny worked tirelessly to make the Globes the event it is today. The award will recognise an unsung hero in the industry.

Entries should include examples of exceptional dedication, passion and a commitment to colleagues and customers alike.

The Innovation in Travel Award

Entries for the 2010 Innovation in Travel Award, sponsored by Cheapflights, are welcome from any travel business operating in, or from, the UK.

The entries will go before a judging panel of industry leaders. Emphasis will be placed on innovation, the application, and its impact.

Previous winners include TripAdvisor, for its adoption and development of social networking tools, and British Airways, which walked off with the honour last year for an iPhone flight-booking application.

On the night…

The night of the Globe Travel Awards will begin at 6pm with a drinks reception, which is an ideal opportunity for guests to relax and catch up with ome old friends – and hopefully make some new ones – before being asked to take their seats in the Great Room for the formal welcome speech by Ferguson.

Following the speech and some notes on the proceedings, guests will be served a three-course meal with wine, sponsored by Attraction World. Seating plans to help guests find their tables, sponsored by World Travel Market, will be available outside the Great Room.

The awards ceremony will then begin at 9.30pm, with a celebrity helping to present the awards. Last year’s presenter was the comedian Michael McIntyre.

Live entertainment will begin at 11pm. Music and dancing, if you are up for it, will continue until 2am, at which point those with any energy left can head to the bar, which will stay open until 3am.

Remember, the number of places available on the night is limited and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

To avoid disappointment, and to get your first choice of seating position, book your ticket now on the Globe Travel Awards minisite.
