Cambuslang Travel staff ‘fuming’ over treatment

Staff from Cambuslang Travel say they are “fuming” about the way they have been treated by the failed company.

The 25 staff employed in the two branches in East Kilbride and Cambuslang say they were informed of the company’s demise by telephone the night after its final day of trading.

Some staff have been retained on a temporary basis to pass on customers’ details to ABTA. The rest are now out of work.

One former employee said she is owed more than £1,000 in wages. “We have been treated badly,” she said.

She and another former member of staff may try to recover their wages through a tribunal.

However, Cambuslang Travel owner John Wilson said he would make sure staff and customers did not lose out. “My first priority is to look after staff and customers,” he said.

Some agents are now in talks with Barrhead Travel, which is looking to employ 75 staff in the coming months. The Scottish miniple is set to open new branches in East Kilbride, Aberdeen and Inverness.

A TSSA union spokesman said: “The company should have looked for alternatives and offered redundancy before it went under. We would advise agents to take appropriate action to get the wages they are owed.”
