Hotel review: Verandah Resort and Spa, Antigua

Where? Antigua’s northeast coast, bordered by Devil’s Bridge National Park.

What’s it like? Typical Caribbean: meandering paths edged by wooden-slatted, whitewashed cottages on stilts with steps up to two semi-detached suites – lovely looking, but a bit of a haul to get a buggy up. The suites have inter-connecting doors for bigger groups. The rooms are simple and spacious with balconies. Public areas have lush grounds and a colonial feel with lots of wooden verandahs and beams.

Eat: The hotel has four dining areas. The main restaurant, Seabreeze, offers an international buffet and Caribbean food. The service was fantastic, while the food was standard all-inclusive fare. Buccaneer has a menu service, while Nicoles, the ‘fine-dining’ option, has a more formal atmosphere. For an easy beach snack, the Tiki bar delivered. There are also bars by the pool and on the beach.

Sleep: The resort’s 196 rooms are all the same – air-conditioned junior suites. They are big enough for two, and we had a cot in our room too. There was also a handy kitchenette.

Play: The kids’ club is fantastic, but slightly tucked away. The climbing frame is particularly impressive. It was hardly used while we were there, but definitely flag it up to clients.

Relax: The resort is set on cliffs, which go down to a couple of coves. The cove below the Tiki bar gets busy and has a water sports centre, while the second cove was virtually empty. There’s a spa, gym and tennis courts, as well as film screenings and cocktails. The main pool was busy, but the adult-only pool was virtually empty.

Nearby: Diving at sister site the St James’s Club, golf at Jolly Harbour Golf Club, and the Devil’s Bridge National Park.

Sell it to: Families, and couples who don’t mind children.

We liked: The friendly staff – smiley, welcoming, cheerful, they genuinely seemed to like working there.

We didn’t like: The food isn’t a strong selling point.
