IT seems that England’s misfits of the football field have forced coach Kevin Keegan to turn abroad for some ‘magical’ inspiration.
As if he has not had enough help from lady luck – thanks to Sweden – the England supremo has travelled to Walt Disney World for more good fortune.
Keegan was spotted by Backchat in the Florida theme park, clearly checking out new recruits for the upcoming Euro 2000 play-offs.
Naturally we could not resist wondering just who King Kev was after.
Goofy in goal perhaps, Donald Duck for some dribbling, or maybe Merlin himself to conjure up a few tricks for the next opponents.
Attempts to find out all from Keegan failed miserably, as the England chief quickly vanished.
Was he hiding from the infamous British press or from the English tourists milling about?
It later emerged he had a secret rendezvous with Disney executives there. This is on top of a meeting with Disney folk in London last month.
The plot was certainly thickening.
Further Backchat investigations revealed Tom Allen, Walt Disney Attractions’ European vice-president, and Andrew Waller, who is to head Disney’s new UK tour operation, had dinner with Keegan recently.
Allen was especially popular with his former Liverpool hero as they also sat next to each other on the way to the US.
Surely Allen and Waller weren’t being called on to help with the next two crucial games?
Sadly this unlikely scenario was not the case.
Tom tells us Keegan was at Disney on a personal visit, but did visit the site’s sports facilities.
“Maybe we can get the England team down here sometime,” he said hopefully.
If they lose in the Euro 2000 play-offs it may be sooner than he thinks.
