CAA says 220 firms have not renewed ATOL

A total of 220 travel companies have not renewed their ATOL, or failed to renew in time for the deadline of September 30 set by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Some 133 have not renewed their licence, including several who went into administration this year. These include Scottish agency McCarthy Travel, All America Holidays and Turkey specialist Scottravel Holidays.

A further 87 are on a list of late-renewing ATOL holders. In these cases, the CAA may not have reached a decision on the application or completed the paperwork.

Until these companies have renewed their licence, they are not allowed to advertise or accept bookings unless they are acting as an agent only.

A spokesman from the CAA said: “We would expect most of these companies to complete the process in the next few weeks.”
