Decline in UK visits overseas continues

The decline in the number of visits abroad by UK residents continued in the three months June to August 2009, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The seasonally adjusted number of visits abroad fell by 3% to 14.6 million when compared with the previous three months, with the associated spending down by 4% to £7.5 billion.

In the non-seasonally adjusted figures for the 12 months to August 2009, visits were down by 13% to 61.4 million when compared with last year.

Visits by UK residents to Europe during that period decreased by 13% from 56 million to 48.6 million. North America decreased by 22% from 4.8 million to 3.7 million. While visits to other parts of the world decreased by 10% from 10.1 million to 9.0 million.
