Refurbishment of two remaining three-star hotels early next year will see Iberostar move its portfolio entirely into the four- and five-star bracket.
Work on the last of the three-star properties, which are both in Majorca, is underway.
The Club Cala Barca in Cala Major will re-open in April 2010 as an all-inclusive, and the Royal Cupido in Playa de Palma will be finished by the summer, re-opening as a couples-only hotel. Both will have four-star ratings once the work is complete.
Majorca-based Iberostar, which currently has 103 properties, will also open its first hotel in the Cape Verde islands in December, the four-star Iberostar Club Boa Vista.
Iberostar trade marketing director Alexander Werneke said the development would not herald a major move by the company onto the islands, which are becoming increasingly important in the UK market.
“We always go step by step, we are a family company, we are not in a rush,” he said.
Iberostar has also added a third city hotel to its portfolio, the historic Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz, the Tenerife capital.
This property will close briefly next year for refurbishment before re-opening in October 2010. It joins other city properties in Gibraltar and Trinidad in Cuba.
