P&O Cruises returns to Alaska after 40-year gap

P&O Cruises is returning to Alaska for the first time in more than 40 years in 2011, when it will be offering a 72-night voyage from Southampton on adult-only ship Arcadia.

Passengers choosing to do the whole voyage will visit 29 ports including St Lucia, Barbados and Aruba in the Caribbean, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York in the US, and Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Ketchikan in Alaska.

There are also two shorter options – 44 nights cruising from Southampton to Los Angeles and 45 nights, sailing from San Francisco to Southampton.

Prices start from £6,999 per person cruise-only for the full voyage, and £4,399 and £4,599 per person respectively for the shorter voyages. Early bookers will receive a discount of up to £1,300 and £250 worth of on board credit.

P&O Cruises managing director Carol Marlow said taking Arcadia to Alaska 40 years after a previous P&O ship, also called Arcadia was there, fulfils a long held ambition for the cruiseline.

She said: “Alaska is one of life’s must-see destinations and research tells us that our passengers agree. P&O Cruises is the only cruiseline offering Alaska as an ex-UK option, and combining it with the East and West coasts of the US makes a contrasting and enticing itinerary.”

The Alaska cruises go on sale on December 1.
