Industry charity Just a Drop is encouraging people to make a 1p donation for every step they take in a week.
The Steps to Water challenge is being held in the week leading up to World Water Day on March 22.
Money donated will support Just a Drop’s efforts to provide safe water to developing communities around the world.
The charity estimates that 844 million people globally do not have access to safe water.
And women and children in developing countries often walk 6km a day to collect dirty water, amounting to 8,000 steps.
Just a Drop founder and chairman Fiona Jeffery said: “We’re asking everyone to bring clean water a step closer this World Water Day, Friday 22 March, by taking on Just a Drop’s Steps to Water challenge.
“Track your steps to water across a week, then donate 1p per step.”
