Islands set sights on short breaks

THE Channel Islands will be coming to the British Travel Trade Fair with news of festivals, pageants, parades and new ideas for year-round short breaks.

Jersey’s main theme for BTTF is food, and it will be promoting its year-long Bon Appetite food festival, for which hotels and restaurants on the island have prepared special menus making the most of Jersey’s home-grown produce and fish.

The highlight will be the International Food Festival, which takes place this year from May 13-21.

Other events to be highlighted at BTTF include Festival 2000 in June, the Jersey Battle of Flowers in July, the International Air Display in August and also the Jersey Festival of World Music in October.

The island, which became one of the first destinations in the world to win Green Globe status from British Airways for its environmental policies, will also be promoting its 50 miles of Green Lanes.

These provide a safe environment for cyclists, walkers and horse-riding by restricting speed limits to 15mph.

A spokeswoman for Jersey Tourism said:”We have chosen to focus on Jersey’s Green Globe status this year because it ties in with the British Tourist Authority’s environmental theme for 2000.”

Both Jersey and Guernsey are trying to attract more short-break business, particularly during the winter, and the two islands will have special deals from hotels and operators.

Guernsey Tourist Board will also have a newly revised short-breaks brochure featuring a range of options including clay-pigeon shooting, golf, beauty breaks and island hopping.

In addition, Guernsey will have the latest news on a £13m redevelopment of Guernsey’s airport terminal scheduled to be operational by summer 2002.
