The deadline is approaching for nominations for the Shine Awards, which recognises achievement by women in the travel industry. This year, instead of the usual glass trophy, winners will receive learning and development opportunities, including courses on leadership, management and digital marketing. Other prizes include a one-year membership of the Travel Club, a private members’ club in Mayfair, and membership of the Institute of Hospitality. As part of a new initiative, the winners will also mentor 10 hospitality and tourism graduates from the London Metropolitan University Business School. Former winners including Vanessa Lenssen of learning holiday specialist golearnto.com, Leigh Jenkins of Von Essen Hotels and Karen Eason of Sunshine Travel are committed to taking part in the mentor scheme. Beginning in January 2010, the mentors will support the mentees over the next year, either face to face or virtually. They will help mentees understand the industry, develop business ideas or apply for jobs. Shine director Gaby Marcon said: “Nurturing talent and supporting entrepreneurship is crucial to the future of the industry and we thank participants and mentors for their commitment.” Nominations can be submitted on the Shine Awards website and close on January 3 2010.
