Severe weather hits Christmas getaway

Holidaymakers may face flight delays and cancellations today as severe weather continues to cause disruption.


Northern Britain was worst affected overnight by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.


Flights from Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick airports are subject to delays and cancellations. Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport reopened after severe snow forced it to close briefly on Wednesday night


Heathrow and Gatwick are open and runways are clear but travellers can expect some disruption because of severe weather. Passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling.


The Met Office has said weather is expected to improve today and tomorrow.


Eurostar said it will be operating a near-normal service on Christmas Eve, after suspending services on Saturday, Sunday and Monday following train breakdowns. A spokesman said the backlog has now been cleared.


Yesterday, a Ryanair passenger jet with 129 people on board skidded off the runway at Prestwick after hitting a patch of ice. It stopped on grass and no-one was injured.
