Three killed as Costa Europa crashes in Sharm

Three crew members have been killed after a Costa Cruises ship collided with the dock in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Costa Europa crashed into the dock at the Red Sea resort during poor weather in the early hours of this morning, sustaining damage to the right side of its hull.

Three British women are reported to have been injured in the accident.

The dead crewmen were from India, Honduras and Brazil.

A statement from the cruise line’s head office in Genoa said: “We sadly have to confirm that three crew members have died. We can confirm that three passengers and one crew member were taken to the city hospital.

“The ship is now safely docked in port. All guests have been disembarked and most are accommodated in hotels. We are arranging their flights back to their destinations.”

Costa Europa, which joined the Costa fleet in 2002, was on an 18-night sailing from Dubai to Savona with 1,437 guests onboard.
