Operators slam FCO’s Thailand travel warning

Tour operators have accused the Foreign Office (FCO) of overreacting by advising tourists against all but essential travel to all parts of Thailand this week, amid ongoing political unrest.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was due to meet the FCO on Thursday to urge it to reduce the nationwide advice, applying the highest level to Bangkok only.

Joanna Cooke, PR manager for the TAT, said: “The current advice is too extreme. The political situation remains in Bangkok but the rest of the country is ready to welcome tourists. We have put together a case based on feedback from tour operators.”

Premier Holidays head of sales and marketing Debbie Goffin said the FCO advice would affect hundreds of her customers, adding: “We are disheartened that the advice has been extended, as there is no trouble in the beach areas.”

Kuoni and Travel 2 have offered alternative destinations or dates to customers booked to travel within seven days.
