Manchester Airport hit by climate change protesters

Climate change protesters caused disruption at Manchester airport this morning after they cut through the perimeter fence in a bid to block the freight terminal.

Flights were suspended for a short time after the security breach.

An airport spokesman said: “All operations were suspended for about 20 minutes while security did a full sweep of the airport. Six incoming flights were diverted to other airports. Everything is back to normal now.”

The protesters from Plane Stupid gained access to the airfield at about 6.45am in what they said was a protest against the planned extension of the airport’s World Freight Terminal.

Some campaigners created a “human circle” around an aircraft, while others stood on giant tripods at the road entrance to the terminal.
