British holidaymakers flee French fires

Hundreds of British holidaymakers were among those forced to evacuate campsites in the south of France due to a wildfire believed to have been sparked by arsonists.

At least 2,000 tourists, including 300 from the UK, escaped the blaze over the weekend which spread over more than three square miles and destroyed 1,600 acres of forest.

The fire broke out on Saturday close to oil refineries near l’Etang de Berre, less than 20 miles outside Marseille.

Strong winds fanned the flames which were tackled by hundreds of fire fighters.

No injuries were reported in the wildfire which was brought under control by Saturday evening.
