Questions and answers: unaccompanied children

We spoke to a selection of seat-only operators about airlines’ rules and regulations regarding unaccompanied minors.

What is the age limit?

Varies from airline to airline, but it is unusual for any carrier to accept unaccompanied minors under the age of five. Air 2000 and Flying Colours will only carry unaccompanied minors between the age of six and 11 years; British Airways has an age limit of five-12 years.

What if the child is deemed by the airline to be too young to fly alone?

Scheduled carriers provide an escort for a fee, which is usually the cost of an adult return fare. Qantas insists parents with children under the age of seven travelling alone pay for a staff escort. Cathay Pacific will carry accompanied infants from three months.

Does an airline need to be told in advance if a child is travelling alone?

Yes. Generally 48hrs notice.

Will someone look after the child in the airport?

Yes, a handling agent will look after them until they board, where they will be handed over to a cabin-crew member.

Does a member of crew sit with the child?

With a group of six or more, Virgin Atlantic provides Virgin Aunties who look after children on the flight. Cathay Pacific provides a flying mum if it has a group of six or more children between six and 12.
