Venice retains top spot in Cruise Week poll

Venice has been voted as the favourite cruise port by British cruise passengers for the second year running.

Almost one in eight (12%) voted the Italian city top of the cruise ports, ahead of New York (9%),  Barcelona (7%), Luxor and Singapore.

Nearly six out of ten cruise goers (59%) think that the “chance to see lots of destinations and countries” is the most appealing aspect of cruising.

The Northern Lights was voted by 57% as the natural phenomenon passengers would most like to view from a cruise ship, beating icebergs, voted for by 11%, and fjords at 9%.

One third (33%) cited whales as the wildlife they would most like to see on a cruise, ahead of dolphins at 25% and polar bears at 22%.

The findings come from a YouGov poll of 2,101 adults by the Passenger Shipping Association to mark National Cruise Week which runs from Sunday (September 19).

Britons’ favourite cruise companions would be either Jennifer Aniston (8%) or Johnny Depp (6%) followed by Cameron Diaz (5%), Angelina Jolie (5%), George Clooney (4%) or Robbie Williams (3%).

But more than one in two (53%) would rather take their partner or family friend to share a cruise ship cabin. “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Jack Sparrow would be the first choice (26%) as escort to a special dinner at the captain’s table.

Almost half (47%) voted the evening stage shows on cruise ships as the best entertainment on board. Dancing came in next for 8% of people, followed by lecturers with 7%.
