Delays at Manchester airport after security alert

Flights in and out of Manchester airport are facing delays today after passengers were evacuated from one of the terminals in a security alert.

Terminal 1 was cleared this morning as a suspect package was discovered. The “suspicious bag” was found as it went through an X-ray machine in the search area where hand luggage is scanned.

Bomb disposal experts are examining the package and police are questioning the owner of package and two other passengers. The area around Terminal One was cordoned off with vehicles being prevented from entering the terminal car parks.

An airport spokesman said: “At approximately 08.50 today, Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport was evacuated while a suspicious bag was investigated at the main security search area by Greater Manchester Police.

“An evacuation is a standard precautionary measure while the investigation is completed to ensure the safety of our passengers and staff. Disruption to flights arriving and departing from Terminal 1 is likely this morning while we resolve the situation.”

Terminals 2 and 3 are operating normally.
