Explore wins Aito sustainable prize

Adventure operator Explore has won the ‘most sustainable tour’ category for a ‘Tiger Tiger’ itinerary in India in sustainable tourism awards run by the Association of Independent Tour Operators.

ATG Oxford’s ‘Sicily: From the Centre to the Sea’ trip was highly commended as a runner up in the awards.

Winner of the personal contribution to sustainable tourism category for 2010 was Nimali Samarasinha, marketing executive at Wendy Wu Tours. Highly commended runner up was Sarah Beard, group escorted tours manager at Journey Latin America.

Judge Dick Sisman, who runs a responsible tourism consultancy, said: “It’s heartening to see so many companies taking sustainability seriously and not just paying lip service to environmental issues in tourism.

“AITO members are clearly leading the field in sustainable tourism matters and I’m delighted that these awards recognise their efforts.”
