Fresh Hong Kong travel alert issued as violence escalates

Escalating anti-government protests centred on a Hong Kong university have triggered a fresh alert for British travellers.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office issued a warning as about 100 protestors were reportedly barricaded inside Polytechnic University.

Dozens were arrested by police on Monday as they attempted to run from the building.

The violence is among the most extreme since demonstrations broke out in Hong Kong in June.

The FCO’s updated travel advice said: “During the week of 17 November there have been exchanges between police and protesters at the Polytechnic University including the use of petrol bombs, tear gas and rubber bullets.

“The situation is volatile and visitors to the area around the university in Hung Hom should exercise caution and be alert to the changing situation.

“Previous demonstrations have led to sections of the city being closed off and temporary suspension of public transport without warning.

“You should keep up to date with developments across Hong Kong.

“Some Mass Transit Railway (MTR) metro stations, including in major tourist areas, have been closed due to damage caused by protests.”
