WTM 2010 preview: Canada stands

Over on its stand (NA1000) the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) is giving agents who complete its new canadaspecialists.co.uk training programme the chance to receive brand new promotional material.

It’s not just about free posters and banners, though. The idea is that you use the material to dress your shop window and then submit a photo of the display in either November, December or January 2011.

The three best will win $3,000 Canadian dollars (£1,860), $2,000 and $1,000 respectively towards staging a Canada evening together with the CTC and partner hosts before March 31, 2011. Word on the street is they’re looking for “creativity and originality”.

Meanwhile, Quebec Tourism will be spilling the beans on the £150 million investment programme in the ski resort of Le Massif, including the new Le Massif Train service to Quebec City, due to start in summer 2011.

Apparently, at Quebec’s Ice Hotel this winter, open from January 7 to the end of March, guests can try their hand at building a typical Quebecois type of igloo called a Queenzy. I’ve heard of making a bed, but making the whole room?

Other co-exhibitors on the stand include Tourism Toronto. Brits account for the largest number of overseas visitors (15.3%) and to help maintain this the city will be publicising its events programme for 2011, including the Rogers Cup and the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as developments like the new Germain Maple Leaf Square and the Trump International Hotel & Tower, set to open next year.

Toronto will also be announcing plans for UK trade activity around the time that the city’s NBA basketball team, the Toronto Raptors, play their first regular-season games in Europe, against the New Jersey Nets at London’s O2 on March 4 and 5, 2011.
