Agents’ Malta tips: Top-end hotels, by Conor Magee

How do you make the most of Malta? Travel Weekly asked the 10 agents we sent to the island to cover Abta’s Travel ConventionConor Magee, Pinnacle WorldwideXara Palace, Mdina

The Xara Palace is a Relais & Châteaux property and is perched on a hilltop in the centre of Malta. It is a 17th century palace located within the fortified, medieval city of Mdina, the old capital.

This exclusive, boutique Hotel has been meticulously but sensitively restored to reflect its former noble standing. We dined in The de Mondion restaurant, rated one of the best on the island.

It provides spectacular panoramic views in a stunning dining room with attentive and discreet service, with a cuisine which combines the finest seasonal produce with a modern Mediterranean style.

Grand Hotel Excelsior, Valletta

This is an excellent five-star hotel situated beside the magnificent sixteenth-century bastions of Valletta. The Maltese capital is brimming with culture, amazing architecture, and wonderful art and the hotel provides stunning views of Marsamxett Harbour and Manoel Island from its location by the edge of the sea. Its central position allows for easy travel to all parts of the Maltese islands.

The Phoenicia Hotel, Valletta

This luxury five-star art deco hotel is located in 7.5 acres of mature gardens and commands glorious views. Its architectural beauty classes it as one of the sights of Malta along with buildings St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grand Masters Palace and those of the Auberges which still stand today.

Its typical Maltese architecture is in striking contrast to, and at the same time in keeping with, the baroque and massive bastion walls that surround Valletta, built as a safeguard against invaders.

In November 1949, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed in Malta. The future queen and her husband visited the hotel on several occasions and came to dance in the Grand Ballroom.

More recently, during HM Queen Elizabeth’s state visit to the island, the hotel was chosen as the venue for one of the official receptions hosted by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The Palace Hotel, Sliema

Inspired by the pulse and passion of a city centre hotel, The Palace Malta is a stylish five-star Boutique Hotel in Malta with distinctive elegance. As one of the top luxury spa hotels in Malta, it offers superior facilities from Designer Suites to a Spa Centre.

This luxurious Malta hotel is intimate and comfortable, yet luxurious and cosmopolitan, offering European elegance in the heart of urban Sliema. Both the hotel and the adjoining Palazzo Capua are complemented by the only Concept Suites in Malta.

These are worlds apart from simply decorated Suites – they are truly individual masterpieces, consisting of six distinct Designer Suites with different and innovative themes, namely: View, Light, Flavour, Fragrance, Texture and Music.

These elegantly furnished Suites are inspired by the senses and offer different designs based on classical and contemporary lines, aimed at offering guests an ultimate experience in hospitality exclusive to The Palace, in Malta.
