St Kitts cruise calls cancelled after robbery

Two cruise lines have cancelled calls at St Kitts this week after passengers on an organised excursion were robbed at gunpoint.

The 17 tourists were held up while on a shore excursion on the Caribbean island from Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Mercury on a cruise from Baltimore.

The two masked robbers reportedly blocked the road with a fallen tree and stole cash, jewellery, cameras and other valuables. No one was injured in the incident on Sunday.

Carnival Cruise Lines’ 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle diverted to Antigua rather than make a scheduled call at St Kitts in the wake of the robbery.

Princess Cruises’ 2,600-passenger Grand Princess will make a similar diversion today (Wednesday). Celebrity said it will monitor the safety situation in St. Kitts but the line has yet to cancel calls at the island.

“We are thankful that none of our guests were injured in this unfortunate event, and will continue to provide them any support they may need,” the company said.

“A vacation is supposed to be filled with fun, rejuvenation and relaxation. An act of crime should not be part of any vacation, and we regret our guests had to experience those events.”
