HAL wins trio of green cruise awards

Holland America Line efforts in making cruising a greener holiday option has led to the company receiving a trio of awards.

The US Coast Guard presented the line with a leading environmental protection award, based on a review of the line’s approach to environmental stewardship.

HAL was also named as the world’s leading green cruise line at the World Travel Awards in London and received a Blue Circle Award from the Port of Vancouver, a recognition reserved for the highest emissions-reduction achievements.

President and CEO Stein Kruse said: “We work diligently every day to reduce Holland America Line’s ecological footprint, and these awards validate our fleet wide efforts.

“We are grateful that the US Coast Guard and our travel industry and seaport partners appreciate our commitment to the environment and have recognized our dedication to environmental stewardship with these awards.”
 
The line’s environmental management system was certified in 2006 and recertified in 2009, it makes efforts to conserve fuel and water, employs latest technology for wastewater and bilge water treatment, and uses innovative strategies to reduce and manage its solid waste stream.
