Port of Dover comes to rescue of stranded travellers

The Port of Dover has said the current snowy weather has revived memories of the ash cloud crisis earlier this year as it stepped in to help stranded travellers.

Delays on Eurostar caused by the Arctic conditions have prompted the port to run operations 24/7 to help get people home in time for Christmas.

The port said it was operating normally with all sailings running to timetable and it said it had stocked up with items such as baby food, blankets and tea and coffee for passengers trying to get home.

In addition the The Travel Centre was kept open throughout last night to provide a haven for displaced passengers, the port said.

Robin Dodridge, director of corporate operations, said: “The port is becoming well-versed in putting its plans into place for handling significant volumes of additional passengers when a major transport crisis hits the UK.

“We have been working hard to ensure that not only is the port open and operating normally but that we can also accommodate and provide a welcoming service to those displaced passengers who might otherwise struggle to reach their destinations during the busy run up to Christmas.

“We are delighted that we can help to make rather than break many people’s festivities.”
