Globe awards appeal raises £5,000 for Mental Health Foundation

A charity appeal at the Travel Weekly Globe Travel Awards raised more than £5,000 for the Mental Health Foundation, with pledges still being counted.

The appeal forms part of Travel Weekly’s Mental Health Matters series of features and events, which was launched in 2019 during the publication’s 50th anniversary year and will continue throughout 2020.

The Mental Health Foundation has supported the series since its inception and was selected as the charity partner for the Globes to reflect an ongoing partnership.

In addition to hearing about the foundation’s work, guests at the ceremony watched a video featuring a range of industry leaders who offered to tell their stories of dealing with mental health challenges to support the appeal.

Chris O’Sullivan, the foundation’s head of business development and engagement, said: “It has been great working with Travel Weekly this year to raise the profile of mental health in the travel industry.

“The kind of authentic leadership shown by Travel Weekly, and by the industry leaders who have spoken out this year, is key to success – and personal stories like the ones we heard at the Globes bring home the impact of mental health challenges on individuals.”

He added: “It was a huge privilege to be nominated as the charity partner for the Globe Travel Awards. Our team had lots of valuable conversations with guests about their mental health and about our work.

“The appeal on the night raised more than £5,000 – donations that will help us reach more people with evidence-based tools to help protect and improve their mental health.”

Stuart Parish, Travel Weekly Group managing director, said: “We were delighted to be able to support the Mental Health Foundation as part of a spectacular Globe Travel Awards, and are grateful to Chris and those who took the time to tell their stories for the appeal.

“The response to our Mental Health Matters series has been incredible, and we will continue to play our part in promoting positive mental health across the travel industry.”
