Pegasus Airlines crash kills three in Istanbul

A Pegasus Airlines aircraft has crashed on landing at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport killing three people and injuring 179.

The aircraft, which had 183 passengers and crew on board skidded off the runway in wet conditions and broke into three pieces.

It had earlier taken off from the Turkish province of Izmir.

Reports say the wounded are being treated in 18 hospitals close to the crash site in the Turkish capital.

Video footage online shows the aircraft landing but continuing at high speed off the end of the runway where there was a drop of around 40 metres.

Flights were diverted to Istanbul Airport while the runway at Sabiha Gokcen was closed before being reopened again overnight.

The airline Pegasus confirmed the aircraft had gone off the runway and passengers were evacuated but gave no further details.

Turkish broadcaster NTV said the aircraft had attempted to land in heavy tailwinds despite two previous flights having aborted landing.

The UK Foreign Office added the incident to its travel advice to Turkey which continues to advise against all travel within 10 kilometres of of the border with Syria, except the city of Kilis.

All but essential travel is advised Sirnak, Kilis (including Kilis city) and Hatay provinces and the provinces of Diyarbakir, Tunceli and Hakkari.

The advice reflects the recent military operation in north-east Syria, increased tensions following the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in a US strike in Baghdad on January 3 and a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Elazig and neighbouring provinces in the east of the country last month.
