More Egypt demos planned but Red Sea resorts ‘remain calm’

Further nationwide demonstrations in Egypt are likely to continue in the coming days, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

But a curfew between 7pm and 6am across the country is not being enforced in the Red Sea area, where the FCO described the situation as remaining calm.

“We continue to advise against all but essential travel to Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Suez,” the FCO said. “We recommend that British nationals without a pressing need to remain in these areas leave by commercial means, where it is safe to do so.

“You must respect the curfew and listen for announcements about any changes to the curfew requirements.”

British nationals are also advised to observe instructions and advice by local security authorities and avoid public gatherings and disturbances.

“We are closely monitoring the situation as it develops and will be reviewing our travel advice regularly,” the FCO added.

Flights continue to be available from Cairo airport with British embassy staff providing 24 hour assistance at Terminals 1 and 3 where British Airways and Bmi operate.
