Cork airport remains shut after crash

Cork airport is expected to remain shut until 4pm today after the fatal crash of a Manx2 aircraft yesterday morning.

Six people, including a relative of the Irish president, were killed and six others injured after the aircraft from Belfast crashed in fog.

The Manx2 commuter flight with 10 passengers and two crew on board crashed on the runway on its third attempt to land in dense fog just before 10am.

Two of the survivors who suffered minor injuries were able to walk away from the wreckage. Four others were being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries last night.

Flights to and from the airport are being diverted with Ryanair transferring services to Shannon and offering coach transfers.

Investigators yesterday said the Manx2 aircraft – a Fairchild Metroliner – was not a modern aircraft but could fly for 30 years if it was properly certified and maintained.

The probe was launched immediately after the accident.
