Reduced Kenya visa fee to continue

The continuation of a reduced visa fee for visitors to Kenya has been confirmed today, but only up until July 1.

It had been expected that the reduced fee of £20 for a single trip, brought in after the political unrest hit visitor numbers two years ago, would revert back to £30 in January.

But visitors to the country this year reported only being charged £20 and the UK representation company for the destination confirmed today the decision had been made to extend the period.

A waiver on the visa fee for children under the age of 16 years will also remain in force until July 1, it was announced.

The Kenyan representative said it was “likely” the fee would go back up to £30 after July 1, but as with January’s deadline this was under review.

“Kenya had a record year for visitors last year, so their thinking is to keep costs lower to encourage people to come,” she said.

“This is great news for UK visitors to Kenya who will make substantial savings on holidays to the country which continues to provide the UK market with good value for money.”

Kenya has been praised in some quarters in east Africa for its determination to attract visitors by keeping costs down. But it has also drawn criticism for undercutting neighbouring countries in the region that charge up to £30.

A plan to bring in a group visa for the region have not progressed beyond the discussion stage, despite it enjoying widespread support.
