The threat of massive summer flight disruption for 22 days from Easter has been averted as Spanish airport workers officially called off strike action.
The walk-outs over concerns about the part-privatisation of national airport operator Aena had previously been suspended after unions secured guarantees over job security and conditions and talks continuned.
The industrial action would have involved security staff, baggage handlers, ground crew and others at 47 Spanish airports.
Union leaders have now announced about 70% of their more than 10,000 members had voted to call off the strikes. Airport staff had voiced concerns that the sale of the company would lead to job losses and a deterioration in conditions. The Spanish government plans to sell up to 49% of Aena in a bid to cut the country’s budget deficit.
A statement from the CCOO union said: “The ratification of this deal means the cancellation of the call for 22 days of strikes planned on different days between April and August.”
