Survey prompts BITOA to rethink convention agenda

THEBRITISH Incoming Tour Operators Association claims it will be putting the emphasis on business rather than fun at its annual convention in February next year.

The event will be held over three days rather than the usual four, and new surgeries have been introduced offering advice on legal problems, information technology, public relations, insurance and taxation.

Speakers include tourism minister Janet Anderson, Hilton International chief executive David Michels and Eastcastle managing director Michael East.

BITOA chief executive Richard Tobias said the increased focus on business was in response to a survey carried out among members.

“The conclusion was that far too many conventions had simply become junkets, with little or no discernable commercial benefit for delegates or their companies,” he said.

“We were determined to modernise and adopt a fresh approach. This new-style convention is one where all of the delegates are encouraged, if not expected, to participate, learn and benefit during the working day.”

Tobias claimed the decision to cut the length of the convention had allowed BITOA to shave £70 a head from the price.

The cost is £195 plus VAT for BITOA members and £495 plus VAT for non-members.

The event will be held in Belfast between February 10 and 12.
