Thomson Airways flight diverted to Athens after bomb alert

Thomson Airways confirmed one its aircraft bound for Egypt from the UK made an emergency landing in Athens following bomb threat yesterday.

Two Greek fighter jets escorted the aircraft flying from Bristol to Sharm el Sheikh with 217 passengers and crew to Athens after a bomb threat was received.

They were all safely evacuated at lunchtime to allow security checks on the Boeing 757 but no explosives were found.

“There was no security issue; there was nothing suspect on the plane,” a police spokesman in the Greek capital said. “All passengers, their luggage and the aircraft have been checked.”

The passengers would soon board the plane again, he added. The Boeing was due to take off at about 5pm to continue its flight to Egypt.

“There were no customer injuries as a result of the alert,” Thomson Airways said, adding that all passengers and crew were looked after in the terminal building while the investigation was conducted.
