Holland America Line extends cruise suspension

Holland America Line has extended the temporary suspension of its sailings until June 30.

The line said the decision was because of continued port closures and travel restrictions, including Canada’s cruise ship suspension until July 1, and affects its sailings in Canada, New England and Europe.

All summer 2020 Alaska cruises on Maasdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Volendam and Westerdam have been cancelled.

Land+Sea Journeys, which include an Alaska cruise as well as an overland tour, have also been cancelled for the entire season.

HAL said it is assessing the future impact of the ‘no sail order’ by the US Centers for Disease Control for cruises through mid-July. Additional deployment details will be shared in the near future, it added.

It follows other lines to have extnded their cruise suspensions, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and Celestyal Cruises.

President Orlando Ashford said: “These are unprecedented times. Having to delay summer cruising and cancel our land tours for the entire season is the responsible thing to do, yet also very disappointing and a first in our more than 70 years of taking guests to Alaska.

“We know this decision impacts our loyal guests, travel advisor partners, staff members and local businesses who rely on summer tourism for their economies. We look forward to better days and returning to a full summer cruising season in 2021.”

Guests on cancelled HAL cruises can either take a future cruise credit for 125% of the amount paid, plus $250 onboard credit, or a 100% cash refund. Bookings will be automatically cancelled, but guests must choose their preference by June 1 or they will default to the future cruise credit option, which is valid on any cruise departing through to December 31, 2021 and must be booked by the end of 2020.

Agent commissions for affected bookings will be protected.
