THE travel industry is not taking full advantage of the technology it possesses, according to PC giant Compaq.
A survey of small and medium-sized travel businesses found those firms which set up a Web site had all the technology but were not spending any time developing the sites.
Only a third of the respondents who had an Internet site spent time surfing the Web and looking at what their competitors were doing. In addition, less than a fifth were considering extranets, where a site is linked to a business partner, and intranets – internal sites.
Compaq predicted that travel will account for over a third of all Internet transactions by 2002, making it the largest revenue generator on the Web.
