Midcounties Co-operative cuts call centre jobs

Midcounties Co-operative Travel is understood to be scrapping its call centre in Walsall with 27 people currently under redundancy consultation.

The company is believed to be switching to a homeworking model where self-employed homeworkers will take the calls generated by cooptravel.co.uk.

A small core team of call centre workers, rebranded the Personal Travel Advisor team, will be retained.

Call centre workers may also have the opportunity to become self-employed homeworkers. Travel Weekly understands staff will find out today (Thursday) whether they will keep their jobs.

The company is taking additional space in its Wolverhampton Street, Walsall offce, which will accommodate the Personal Travel Advisor team as well its e-commerce and marketing departments. It is currently refurbishing the premises.

Co-op Travel general manager Sue Reid said: “We are in a period of formal consultation and therefore we are not able to make any comment on individual circumstances. However, we are hopeful that the majority of our colleagues will continue to work with the society.”
