Qatar Airways plans South Africa rescue flights for stranded Brits

Qatar Airways is to run a limited number of special charter flights to help rescue Britons stranded in South Africa.

The Middle East carrier is working with the South African government to organise flights from Johannesburg to Qatar with onward connections to the UK and other destinations.

The UK government plans no more special charters from South Africa after a series ran between April 9-17.

It is not yet clear when South African authorities will permit normal commercial flights to start operating again after the closure of airspace as part of global restrictions to contain the spread of Covid-19.

However, Qatar Airways is arranging limited special repatriation charter flights with passengers required to wear masks and gloves.

The Foreign Office said: “Those intending to travel onwards to the UK would need to meet UK immigration requirements.

“In line with the requirements of the Qatar authorities, travellers would also need to have an onward flight booked to the UK for the same day they arrive in Qatar, and they would be required to remain at the airport prior to that flight.”
