Factfile: Credit card transactions

Advice for face-to-face transactions


Match the gender of the name on the card to the cardholder where shown.


Match the age of the cardholder with the member since date where it is shown. A 20-year-old cannot have been a member since 1967.


When phoning for authorisation, check four-digit printed security codes on Amex cards.


Match card number with print-out from PDQ machine.


Check signature when cardholder signs.


If in any doubt make a Code 10 call to the authorisation service. Make sure you speak to Code 10 operator after he/she has spoken to customer.


Look for any signs of tampering of the card.


Never allow third-party transactions such as using family members’ cards.


Advice for cardholder not present at transactions


During the checking procedure, ask for the three-digit security code on the back of the card or in Amex’s case the four-digit code on the front of the card.


Be wary of cardholders giving mobile telephone contact numbers. Where possible, phone the client back on the number given.


Be wary of clients who are unwilling to come into the office to collect tickets without a good reason.


Make sure you get the address the credit-card statements are delivered to.


Get the name of the person to whom the goods are to be delivered to.


Record account number and name which appears on the card.


Record card valid from/to dates.


If in any doubt, make a Code 10 call to authorisation service.
