Editor’s letter: Shut the door on wasted energy

TWgroup editor Lucy HuxleyAs I write this, I’m heading to Jamaica for the opening of the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship in Montego Bay.

The centre is the latest example of the Virgin Group’s commitment to the destinations in which it operates; a focus also highlighted by Virgin Holidays’ headline sponsorship of this week’s Responsible Travel-themed edition of our print magazine.

In tough times, issues such as sustainability and responsible travel can be regarded as a low priority. But there is a sound business rationale for taking a responsible approach to how you operate.

Keeping costs to a minimum is critical in the current market, and conserving energy is just one way to do so. That is why it’s a surprise to find 70% of high street agencies have a policy of keeping doors open in all weathers as revealed by an Abta survey. Closing doors would not only benefit the environment, but also the bottom line.

We’re also celebrating the opening of nominations for the Globe Travel Awards 2012, and it is encouraging to see many previous winners appearing in the magazine for their commitment to sustainability.

There is still plenty of work to be done and many tough discussions to be had. But the industry can be proud that it is starting to make some genuine efforts to ensure it has a sustainable future.
