The Caribbean is the latest boom area for the dynamic packaging sector as agents look for more flexibility and better prices, according to Getabed.co.uk.
The bed bank reports bookings up 280% for the region. Barbados has seen the most dramatic rise, with sales up by 310% in 2011 compared with the same period in 2010. Three-digit growth has also been seen for Antigua and Saint Lucia, while Getabed reports a 45% boost for Jamaica.
Getabed has concentrated contracting resource in this area in the last 12 months. Many hotels are offering discounts of up to 40% off standard rates, meaning that the area is becoming more affordable, according to product manager Alex Wilson.
The bed bank plans to expand its presence in the Caribbean further and is looking at increasing its property portfolio in Jamaica, Riviera Maya, Grenada, Tobago and the Bahamas.
Managing director Matt Stuart said: “There has been a general shift in the way people are booking the Caribbean. Thanks to Air Passenger Duty rises, the recession, the availability of more special offers and rapid changes in technology, people are looking to source different holiday components separately.”
Wilson said customers and agents were demanding flexibility on products, duration of stays and a highly competitive price.
