A proposed “traffic light” system which would establish a common protocol for travel restrictions within EU member states has been approved by commissioners, The Telegraph reports.
Members now need to agree on the level of infections which would trigger restrictions on a country and a standard response for travellers returning from high-risk areas, which could include quarantine or testing.
Ylva Johansson, EU commissioner for home affairs, said on Friday: “Today’s measures build on this track record so that we can fully benefit from our Schengen area. That is why we want a clear ‘green, orange, red’ system and not a kaleidoscope of individual measures.”
Under the proposals, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) would publish a colour-coded map on a weekly basis, with member states required to inform each other and Brussels on a Thursday before implementing restrictions at the start of the following week.
