Thomson flights disrupted by Paphos strike

Thomson Airways flights to and from the UK have faced disruption following an unplanned strike by baggage handlers in Cyprus.

Hundreds of passengers travelling with a range of airlines were caught up in the dispute at Paphos airport over a reported plan to cut staffing by seven employees and reduce shifts for the remainder.

Several inbound flights were diverted to Larnaca but around 14 flights due to depart were affected.

Thomson was forced to reschedule its flying programme on Wednesday to ensure all holidaymakers were able to return home or get to their destination on the island.

The impromptu action by 100 ground handlers employed by Swissport at the airport resulted in a knock-on effect to what the carrier described as a “small number” of flights yesterday (Thursday).

A Thomson Airways spokesman said: “We have been in touch with these customers encouraging them to stay at home during the delay if possible, and providing welfare for those already at the airport.

“We have also been working hard to reunite all customers with their bags, as the strike meant that it was not possible for them all to collect their luggage upon arrival in Cyprus.”

This was expected to have been completed by last night and all travellers flying back to the UK were expected home yesterday.

Passengers due to join the Thomson Celebration in Paphos have their luggage with them on board the cruise ship, and it was due to sail yesterday evening.

“Thomson Airways apologises for the inconvenience to customers by these events, which unfortunately were out of our control, and appreciates customers’ patience and understanding during the delays,” the spokesman said.
