Holidaymakers and business travellers accessing the internet on smartphones while overseas look set to continue to be hit with hugely inflated “roaming” prices.
According to a report in The Guardian, the excessive charges will remain “hundreds of times more expensive abroad than at home” for the next decade.
There had been hopes that new caps due to be introduced by the European commission would help significantly reduce the potential cost to travellers.
But MEPs have warned that even under the new rules – which would run until 2022 – phone operators could charge up to £420 for one gigabyte of data downloaded.
