Training: on the job training and courses run by the STB and Scottish Convention Bureau.
First travel job: trainee with Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board, which involved floating between all departments.
Career path: following the trainee position with Aberdeen and Grampian Tourist Board, she moved into the marketing department and then to the publications unit. She then moved to visitor services, managing the operation of tourist information centres. In 1996 Rachael moved to the convention bureau within the tourist board. In October 1997 she took up her current position as sales manager UK at the Scottish Convention Bureau.
Advice for people wishing to develop a career in travel: “Communication and people skills are essential. In this industry being a self-starter is a distinct advantage and good product knowledge is a must. All experience gained is of value and enables you to develop a better understanding of your marketplace and clients’ needs.”
