Wizz Air poaches ex-easyJet commercial chief

Ex-easyJet commercial chief Robert Carey is taking up the newly-created role of president of rival Wizz Air as the budget carrier beefs up its senior management.

Carey, who resigned from the UK carrier last week, will oversee operations and commercial functions, leading business strategy, growth, cost control, operational results and competitive strategy.

He joined easyJet as chief commercial and strategy officer in 2017 and has been replaced with the promotion of Sophie Dekkers.

Carey, who started his aviation career 20 years ago with America West Airlines followed by Delta Air Lines, will join Wizz Air on June 14, 2021.

Wizz Air has also appointed Michael Delehant from Spanish low cost carrier Vueling as new group chief operations officer from April 1 next year.

He replaces Diederik Pen, who is stepping down from his position after eight years “to pursue other interests outside of the company”.

Wizz Air chief executive Jozsef Varadi said: “Today’s announcements underline Wizz Air’s investment in the future.

“We are further enhancing our leadership capacity  as Wizz Air continues to demonstrate outstanding agility in the  pursuit of being the ultimate structural cost winner in the industry.

“This has been an unprecedented year for aviation, yet Wizz Air has displayed rigorous cost control and a process-driven weighed decision-making that resulted in us being one of the best positioned airlines in Europe today.

“I am pleased to welcome Robert and Michael on board of this exciting journey. The gentlemen bring valuable expertise and new energy to drive our aggressive growth agenda in the years to come.”
