Portsmouth International Port is preparing for a record month in May – the first anniversary of the opening of its new passenger terminal.
The port is to handle 18 cruise ships this month with newcomers including Noble Caledonian’s Caledonian Sky and CMV’s Marco Polo.
Two ships will dock at the port on the same day on May 11, signalling the start of the summer season. Voyages of Discovery’s vessel Discovery and Noble Caledonian’s Island Sky will both be operating from Portsmouth until the autumn.
Classic Cruises’ ship Athena is sailing from Australia to reposition itself in the UK for the summer.
The new terminal is part of a £16.5 million package of improvements that have been a key factor in attracting new cruise ship business.
Port manager Martin Putman said: “We have invested heavily in new passenger facilities over the last few years, and one result is a growth in our cruise business.
90% of cruise ships calling at Portsmouth this year are repeat callers, satisfied companies coming back for more.
“With an extension to one of our berths we now have more flexibility too, so a greater range of ships can dock allowing more passengers to enjoy the benefits of using our historic port.”
