Consumers urged to help Make Holidays Greener

The Travel Foundation is poised to launch its biggest-ever consumer campaign and is asking agents for help.

The sustainability charity, which is funded by industry and customer donations, plans a campaign to Make Holidays Greener throughout July, and it wants agents and tour operators to spread the word.

Make Holidays Greener is in its third year and follows the Travel Foundation’s trade-focused campaign to Make Travel Greener, which saw thousands of members of the trade complete an online training course in sustainability.

Now the focus is on consumers, with the accent on fun but with a serious intention. The aim is to challenge consumers to do at least one thing on holiday that will benefit local people and protect the environment.

The major players have signed up again this year after the charity had more than 30 participating businesses last year. The target now is to have the support of at least 150 independent agents.

Travel Foundation chief executive Sue Hurdle said: “We’re having a more sustained campaign through the busiest period of the year to engage more customers and staff. But the messages don’t apply for only a week or a month.”

The Make Holidays Greener website goes live as world leaders meet for the latest round of talks on global sustainability targets at the United Nations Rio+20 Summit.
